HPB300 plain round steel bars and HRB400 ribbed steel bars are two types of core steel bars commonly used in construction. They differ significantly in performance, appearance, and application scenarios.

Mechanical Properties:

  • HPB300: Yield strength standard value is 300 MPa, tensile strength standard value is 420 MPa, elongation after fracture is not less than 25%, showing good ductility and capable of undergoing significant plastic deformation under load.

  • HRB400: Yield strength standard value is 400 MPa, tensile strength standard value is 540 MPa, elongation after fracture is not less than 16%, higher in strength than HPB300, but relatively poor in ductility.

Surface Shape:

  • HPB300: This is a plain round bar with a smooth surface and no ribs. Its bond with concrete relies primarily on friction and chemical adhesion, resulting in relatively low bond strength.

  • HRB400: This is a ribbed bar with longitudinal and transverse ribs on its surface. Common transverse rib shapes include spiral, herringbone, and crescent. The presence of ribs increases the contact area with the concrete and improves bond strength.

Processing Performance:

  • HPB300: Its core diameter is smaller. For 180° cold bending, the core diameter only needs to be 1d (d is the bar diameter). The smooth round surface reduces friction during bending, making forming easier to control. Its low carbon equivalent also provides excellent weldability, with a post-weld strength loss of less than 10%.

  • HRB400: Due to the presence of ribs, cracks are more likely to form at the bend. The core diameter must be ≥3d, making it relatively difficult to fabricate. High welding process requirements are crucial. Improper welding can easily lead to welding defects, affecting the performance of the bar.

Applications:

  • HPB300: Due to its lower strength, it is primarily used in non-prestressed components in general building structures, such as slab reinforcement, beam and column stirrups, and hanging rings.

  • HRB400: Widely used in structural components requiring higher strength, such as beams, columns, and slabs in high-rise buildings, large bridges, and hydraulic structures. It is the primary reinforcement in building structures.
